History of BTF

Tennis began in Bahrain the mid 1960's by a group of the expat communities in Bahrain, as Public Security Club, Bahrain Tennis Club, Awali Club and the Indian Club were the venues where the game was first practiced until the beginning of the 1970's. The Public Security Club was home to most of the local tennis activities.

The Bahraini Tennis Federation (BTF) was founded in early April 1980, under the presidency of Dr. Tawfiq Abdel Rahman Al Moayyed. The federation's main objective was to make Bahrain the centre of the game launch in the Gulf region, as a centre to develop the game in the GCC was established.

International Tennis Federation Development Office head Mr. Doug McCurdy, along with Barbara Wank and Jeremy Scheel, were in charge of the centre, which provided several training courses for national team players, referees and coaches from all over the GCC.

Bahrain was a pioneer in organizing GCC tournaments, as it organized the first GCC Junior Championship in 1982, when Bahrain won the first places in all its categories.

The BTF became affiliated to the International Tennis Federation in 1982. And in 1985, they joined the Asian Tennis Federation. The BTF also joined the GCC Tennis Organising Committee in the year 1986.

The Presidency of the federation as follows:

  • Shaikh Abdul Rahman bin Rashid Al Khalifa
  • Dr. Tawfiq Abdel Rahman Al Moayyed (1980 to 1996)
  • Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Salman Al Khalifa (1997 to present)

The BTF organized many GCC tournaments: (Teams Championship, Singles Championship, Under-14 and under-18 Championships , Under-12 and under-16 Championship) from 1984 until present.

Women also played a major part in the game development, with the emergence of several talents like Latifa Khonji, Nahed Jaffar Abdulaal, Linda Ahmed Abou Mushref and Hadeel Ali Abdel Raouf.

Hadeel Ali participated in many GCC, Arab and international championships. Among the most prominent achievements was winning first place and the gold medal in the under-16 International Championship in Bangladesh in 2009.

Achievements:
  1. Bahrain won second place in the under-16 singles championship in November, 1991.
  2. Essam Abdulaal won first place in the singles event in the Fourth GCC Championship, which was held in Saudi Arabia from December 24 to 27, 1991.
  3. Bahrain tennis teams participated in the GCC Teams Championship held in the Sultanate of Oman from February 1 to 7, 1992.
    • Winning first place in the seniors age category.
    • Second place in the under-14 age category.
    • Fourth place in the under-18 age category.


  4. Essam Abdelaal won first place in the Shahba Al Sham International Championship in Damascus in 1992 and 1993. They finished third in 1995 and second in 1996.
  5. Hesham Abdelmajeed won first place in the singles category in the Panasonic Open Championship held in Saudi Arabia from October 12 to 29, 1993.
  6. Bahrain finished second in the Fourth Under-16 Arab Championship held in home and away basis in 1993.
  7. The junior team won the under-14 championship in third place in the Third Arab Championship in Saudi Arabia in September, 1993.
  8. Bahrain were second in the Seventh Under-15 Teams Championship in 1996.
  9. Bahrain won the first place on GCC senior teams held on Riyadh, KSA April 2015.

To promote the game of tennis, support and supervise local tennis activities and organize a national team by seeking potential young candidates and strive to provide them with coaching, monitoring and developing their performance to accordingly make them able to compete and represent the kingdom of Bahrain in the Regional and International tennis events.
